Exercise your way out of back pain!
Everyone has a story about how to manage/treat chronic back pain (> 12 weeks) but more often than not they are based on popular myth and not fact. The fact is, there is strong evidence showing that exercise is beneficial for people with chronic back pain. Some ways that exercise is helpful includes: the muscles get stronger and can work for longer; structures like the discs in the spine and the nerves require movement to get their nutrients and be healthy; the central nervous winds down and helps “turn down the pain volume”. One really important is that during exercise your body produces its own pain medication, endorphins are one of these, so that after exercise your pain tolerance increases. It hurts less and this can last for up to one hour depending on the exercise!
